Model information
Description
RC Plane Tail Steering Wheel
Purpose
This model is a remix of Jkilby's tail wheel and Qrome's 54mm wheel and tire. It is designed to provide a tail steering solution for RC planes, featuring a taller wishbone to accommodate larger wheels and threaded posts to prevent components from detaching during use.
Practical Uses
It serves as landing gear for RC aircraft, specifically functioning as a steerable tail wheel assembly. The design ensures the wishbone and rudder move in unison while allowing the fuselage plate to rotate freely.
Included Parts
- Wishbone
- Wheel
- Tire
- Rudder Guide
- Fuselage Plate
- Rudder Plate
- Nut
Printing and Assembly Guidance
The author suggests printing the wheel from PETG and the tire from TPU.
To assemble the wheel, insert it between the wishbone and slide a screw through to act as an axle. Tighten until excessive play is removed, ensuring the wheel can still rotate freely. A second, slightly smaller nylon nut can be used to prevent the first nut from backing off.
For the fuselage plate, slide its hole onto the wishbone post; the bottom of the post is smooth to allow the plate to rotate freely. Secure loosely with a nut. Slide the rudder plate onto the rudder guide's threaded post and secure tightly with a nut so it does not spin. Slide the other hole of the rudder plate onto the fuselage nut and secure tightly with a nut to fix the rudder plate to the wishbone.
Finally, glue the fuselage plate to the bottom of the fuselage and the rudder guide to the rudder, ensuring the wishbone post is centered directly under the rudder's axis of rotation.

This is my remix of the RC plane tail steering wheel remixed in Tinkercad from Jkilby's tail wheel. Original credits at the bottom. I replaced the wheel with Qrome's 54mm wheel and tire. I made the wishbone taller to fit the wheel and I replaced the wishbone and rudder guide connections with threaded posts to prevent the wheel from falling off. Lastly I raised the height of the fuselage plate to add clearance for the threaded post.

Assembly:

The wheel and tire are two pieces, I printed the wheel from PETG and the tire from TPU.

The wishbone connects to the wheel using a screw as the axle. Insert the wheel in between the wishbone and slide a screw through. Tighten it until it squeezes the wishbone just enough to remove excessive play in the wheel, but not too tight to constrict the wheel from freely rotating. I added a 2nd slightly smaller nylon nut which formed new threads tightly enough to prevent the 1st nut from backing off.

The fuselage plate is needed for support.
